Having a wonderful time, wish you were here…. No that’s not right. What I meant to say was, as promised, I am finally settled and would love to share some things about my new adventure in New Mexico. But where to start?
First off, all my colleagues have been wonderfully welcoming and professional and it’s such a joy to be working with such an amazing group of folks, some of whom are from Chicago, some from Miami, and some from Atlanta, so I feel right at home.
I’ve been able to visit two of the eight historic sites under my purview: Bosque Redondo and Lus Luceros, both amazing sites with centuries of history. And on my first visit I had the excitement of standing about 3′ from an Eastern Diamondback! Yikes. All is well, we certainly had lots of snakes in SW Georgia as well. Below is a picture of Rebecca and Kara who work at Los Luceros. They were incredibly knowledgeable and welcoming and showed me around all the site that sits on the Rio Grande.

Again, the people here are incredibly friendly and of course sitting at dinner one night as we struck up a conversation with some folks at the next table, when I said “Thomasville..” I got the usual eyes wide open and gasp and then “I love Thomasville, I have a home in Apalachicola, etc, etc. and so it goes.

As I’ve always said it’s about 2 degrees of separation from T’ville. I also visited Bosque Redondo, our site in SE New Mexico that marks years on internment of 10,000 Native Americans by the military from 1863-1868. The manger Aaron and his staff do an outstanding job of taking care of the property and sheep! The churo sheep have a long and storied history in the State (more about that later). And below is an image of our visit to the prayer circles at Bosque where the Navajo and Mescalero can honor their ancestors. Amazing staff doing amazing work!

Of course we miss all our friends back home but we’ve already found a drum circle for Bill and about a 1000 dogs for me to pet and oogle over. So I’m off to Truth or Consequences tomorrow and my car just left Thomasville today so soon I will have my trusty Subaru to start exploring with. Wishing everyone well and I’ll send more pic’s and updates soon!
